Phuket big Buddha or The great Buddha of Phuket as it is called is a Maravija statue. The official name of this statue is Phara Phutta Ming Mongkol Eknakiri and is located on top of Nakkerd Hill near Chalong.
The statue started to be built in 2004 and in 2015 the base of the statue was finished, in 2017 80% of the project was complete. The statue cost 30 million baht which was mainly from donations.
The statue is 45 meters long and 25 meters wide and depicts Gautama in a sitting position. The statue is the third disturbed in Thailand. The statue is made of concrete and covered with Burmese white marble
Gautama was an ascetic and spiritual teacher in ancient India who lived in the 6th or 5th century BC He was the founder of Buddhism and is revered by Buddhists as a fully enlightened being who taught a path to Nirvana.
According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha was born in Lumbini, in what is now Nepal, to high-born parents of the Shakya clan, but abandoned his family to live as a wandering ascetic. He lived a life of begging, asceticism and meditation and attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. The Buddha then wandered through the lower Gangetic plain teaching and building up a monastic order. He taught a middle way between sensual indulgence and severe asceticism, a training of the mind that included ethical training and meditative practices such as effort , mindfulness and jhana . He died in Kushinagar aged 80 and attained paranivana. The Buddha has since been revered by many religions and societies across Asia.
